VGCCC Warns Venues of Trading Hour Violations During Public Holidays
With the upcoming Good Friday and ANZAC Day public holidays approaching, the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has issued a stern reminder to state pubs and clubs to adhere to the holiday trading hours. The commission emphasized that violators will face fines and other penalties for non-compliance.
Increased Scrutiny on Trading Hours
As the holiday season draws near, the VGCCC has heightened its focus on ensuring that venues strictly adhere to trading hour regulations during Easter and ANZAC Day. Last year, the authority fined 14 venue operators a total of AUD 195,000 for violations, with an additional 4 operators receiving censure warnings.
Suzy Neilan, the newly appointed CEO of VGCCC, stressed the importance of following the rules during significant public holidays like Good Friday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day. Neilan acknowledged that some operators might not fully understand their obligations and urged them to familiarize themselves with the regulations to avoid penalties.
“With Good Friday almost upon us, I strongly advise venues to ensure they know, understand, and comply with the obligations of their license and only operate their poker machines during permitted hours,” said Suzy Neilan, CEO of VGCCC.
New Regulations Implemented in 2024
In August 2024, new laws were implemented in Australia requiring venues to close their poker machine areas between 4 am and 10 am daily. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in significant fines and penalties.
Past Violations and Fines
The VGCCC cited previous instances where venues were fined for trading hour violations. The Melbourne Racing Club was fined AUD 60,000 for allowing the use of poker machines before noon on Good Friday at properties including Steeples, The Coach and Horses, and Peninsula Club.
Additionally, Hoppers Crossing Club Limited received a $30,000 fine for breaching restrictions on both Good Friday and ANZAC Day. The Sale & District Greyhound Racing Club was also censured for violating ANZAC Day trading hours.
Neilan emphasized that the severity of the violation determines the penalty imposed by VGCCC, considering factors such as the duration customers played outside permitted hours, revenue generated during that time, and the venue’s compliance history.
