New Jersey Gaming Industry Sees Decline in Q1 2025 Revenue
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has recently released a report detailing the performance of the local gaming industry in the first quarter of 2025. The report shows a slight decline in gaming revenue, which can be attributed to a lower hotel occupancy rate during this period.
Q1 2025 Performance Highlights
According to the DGE report, Atlantic City’s casino licensees generated a net revenue of $730.3 million in the first quarter of 2025, representing a decrease of 5.1% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the gross operating profit for casino licensees in Q1 2025 was $132 million, down by 15.1% from the prior-year period.
The report also revealed that the hotel occupancy rate in casino hotels during Q1 was 62.9%, marking a 1.9% decrease from the same quarter in 2024.
Revenue Declines Across Most Casinos
Most casino operators in New Jersey reported a decline in revenue during Q1 2025, mirroring a broader trend in the industry. The Borgata, however, maintained its position as the top performer with $174.2 million in revenue, a 2.7% decrease from the previous year. The gross operating profit for the Borgata was $48.2 million, down by 6.8%.
Other casino licensees such as Bally’s, Caesars, Golden Nugget, Harrah’s, and Ocean Casino also experienced revenue declines ranging from 3.4% to 15.9%. Despite the challenging market conditions, some properties managed to fare better during the quarter.
Positive Performance from Some Properties
Three licensees, including Tropicana, Hard Rock, and Resorts Casino, reported somewhat favorable metrics in Q1 2025. Tropicana generated a net revenue of $61.1 million, down by 3.2% year-on-year, but saw an increase of 7.1% in gross operating profit to $13.4 million.
Hard Rock maintained stable net revenue at $135 million, with a slight increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year. The operator’s gross operating profit also saw a slight uptick of 2.9% to $27 million.
Resorts Casino reported net revenue of $40.5 million and gross operating profit of $3.6 million, both showing an increase from Q1 2024 results. However, a direct comparison was challenging due to the recent closure of its Resorts Digital brand, impacting the overall business.
Overall, the New Jersey gaming industry has faced challenges in the first quarter of 2025, with most casinos experiencing revenue declines. However, a few properties managed to navigate the tough market conditions and achieve positive results during this period.
