Former Baylor University Athletics Staffer Receives Penalties for Betting Scandal
A former Baylor University athletics staffer is facing serious consequences after it was discovered that he placed thousands of bets over a six-year period, with some of the bets involving Baylor games.
Penalty for “Significant Conflict of Interest”
Sam Hancock, who previously served as the school’s director of resource development, has received a two-year show-cause penalty from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for a “significant conflict of interest” related to his betting activities between July 2019 and September 2024.
According to the NCAA’s report, Hancock placed approximately 2,950 bets totaling around $45,979 on three daily fantasy sports (DFS) platforms during that time, including 113 wagers on Baylor games. The NCAA stated that Hancock violated the principles of honesty and sportsmanship by engaging in sports betting activities despite receiving education on the standard rules from the University.
While the infractions were not considered major violations, the NCAA found the volume and nature of the bets concerning, especially since some bets involved Baylor athletes.
No DFS Names Revealed
The NCAA did not disclose the specific DFS platforms used by Hancock or provide details about the bets placed. However, the mention of bets involving athletes suggests that player prop-style wagers on certain DFS sites were involved. This issue is particularly sensitive in Texas, where sports betting legislation is still pending.
Although DFS operates in a legal gray area, it is widely available, with many operators promoting their services in states like Texas and California. The largest DFS brands in the market offer college-focused betting products, including player stats and performance outcomes.
Two-Week Suspension and Counseling
As part of the show-cause order, Hancock is required to attend gambling counseling and pay his own way to the NCAA’s Regional Rules Seminars. He must also serve a two-week suspension from his current role and is prohibited from interacting with college athletes or athletics staff during that period.
Currently holding a leadership position in the Wichita State University athletics department, Hancock has been the senior director of development and annual giving since November 2024. Prior to that, he held various roles at Baylor University for over five years.
While Hancock’s actions did not breach NCAA Level 1 rules, the sanctions highlight the increasing concern surrounding betting involvement by individuals within college programs, even when conducted through DFS platforms.
