The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Know Your Losses Activity Statement) Bill 2025 was introduced in Parliament on February 10. If enacted, this bill would mandate gambling platforms to constantly show three key figures: the amount of money lost by the player in the current month, total losses for the year, and cumulative losses since joining the site. These figures must be displayed prominently with a minimum font size of 10 points to ensure players can easily monitor their losses while gambling, as reported by the Australian Associated Press.

Supporters of the bill argue that many gamblers are unaware of the extent of their losses, often underestimating their expenditures. Sharkie emphasized that this legislation requires minimal government intervention but has the potential to prevent financial distress and mental health issues caused by gambling. Martin Thomas from the Alliance for Gambling Reform described the situation as a growing crisis, attributing gambling-related problems to numerous suicides. He criticized inadequate consumer protections and aggressive marketing strategies employed by betting companies as significant contributors to the issue.
Debate Reignites Over Gambling Advertisements and Regulatory Inaction
The proposed law has placed pressure on Communications Minister Michelle Rowland, who has faced criticism for failing to address gambling regulations. Previous discussions centered on restricting gambling ads during children’s programming and sports events and limiting TV ads to two per hour, but these proposals were ultimately abandoned.
The introduction of the Know Your Losses bill follows the recommendations outlined in the 2022 Murphy Report, advocating for substantial changes in gambling practices, including a gradual ban on all gambling advertisements. While calls for stricter regulations persist, the Albanese Government suggests that major reforms may be postponed until after the upcoming elections.
If passed, the legislation would impose severe penalties on entities that violate the regulations, with fines reaching up to 500 penalty units per day for criminal offenses and 750 penalty units for civil infractions, multiplied by five for corporations.
