AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchange Firms to Act or Risk Cancellation
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has launched a campaign targeting inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms, urging them to either use their registrations or risk having them canceled. This initiative also extends to crypto ATM providers, as announced by AUSTRAC.
Identifying Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, but not all of them are active. AUSTRAC has expressed concerns about the number of inactive firms and the potential risks associated with them operating in a high-risk sector. The center will be reaching out to DCEs that are no longer trading to address this issue.
According to Brendan Thomas, AUSTRAC’s CEO, registered DCE firms must keep their details updated, even if they are no longer providing services. The goal of this campaign is to prevent criminal exploitation of inactive businesses within the DCE sector.
Use It or Lose It
Thomas highlighted the risks associated with criminals using cryptocurrency for money laundering, scams, and other illegal activities. By canceling registrations of inactive DCE businesses, AUSTRAC aims to strengthen the sector against such vulnerabilities and deter criminals from exploiting currency exchange services.
Furthermore, this campaign will enhance the accuracy and integrity of AUSTRAC’s register, ensuring that only active and legitimate DCE services are included.
AUSTRAC also reassured inactive firms that they can contact the center to cancel their registrations and are welcome to re-apply in the future if circumstances change.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
In addition to targeting inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly searchable DCE register. This platform will allow citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers and confirm their compliance with regulatory oversight.
Brendan Thomas emphasized the importance of driving criminals out of the industry and ensuring that legitimate providers are easily identifiable by the public. Registration cancelations will be regularly updated on AUSTRAC’s official website as part of this transparency effort.
