AGCO Fines Great Canadian Entertainment for Allowing Minors to Gamble at Ontario Casinos
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) recently imposed penalties totaling CAD 151,000 ($108,542) on Great Canadian Entertainment for alleged violations at three of its casinos. The penalties were issued due to instances where minors were able to gamble at the casino properties, breaching regulations.
Minors Accessing Toronto-Area Casinos
Investigations by the AGCO revealed four separate occasions where minors were able to access and play at Great Canadian Entertainment’s Toronto-area casinos, including Casino Ajax, Pickering Casino Resort, and Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto.
While two violations were reported at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, the other two properties were each found to have committed a single breach of regulations.
AGCO’s Commitment to Preventing Underage Gambling
The AGCO emphasized the significance of upholding high standards for gaming operators in Ontario and reiterated its commitment to reducing the harm caused by gambling. The regulator mandates that operators verify the age and identity of visitors, ensuring that only those of legal age participate in gambling activities.
Operators are required to equip their employees with the necessary competence, skills, experience, and training to effectively carry out their responsibilities, which include preventing minors and self-excluded individuals from gambling.
Penalties Imposed on Great Canadian Entertainment
The AGCO fined Great Canadian Entertainment a total of $108,542, with detailed penalties allocated to each casino property. Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort were both fined CAD 50,000 ($35,941) for violating specific sections of the Registrar Standards.
Great Canadian Casino Resort faced a slightly higher penalty of CAD 51,000 ($36,660) due to two breaches of regulations. The company has the option to appeal the fines to the Licence Appeal Tribunal.
