ACMA Blocks Two More Offshore Online Casinos in Australia
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has recently announced its continued efforts to protect Australia’s gaming market by blocking two more offshore online casinos. The regulator has taken action against Crown Slots and Billy Billion for operating in violation of Australian law.
Regulatory Action Against Violators
According to the ACMA, both Crown Slots and Billy Billion have breached the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. As a result, the authority has requested Australian internet service providers to block access to these two online casino websites. This move is part of the ACMA’s ongoing strategy to prevent illegal offshore operators from targeting Australian players and taking money from the local market.
The ACMA has been actively blocking illicit offshore operators since November 2019 and has prevented over 1,178 illegal gambling and affiliate websites from operating in Australia. Additionally, 220 illegal services have voluntarily exited the Australian market since the ACMA started enforcing the country’s gambling laws.
Recent Enforcement Actions
In February, the ACMA targeted eight more offshore online casino operators, including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, and others. These websites were found to be in violation of Australian laws and were promptly blocked by ISPs to prevent access for Australian players.
The ACMA wants to remind consumers that online gambling is illegal in Australia, and even if a website appears legitimate, it is likely operating unlawfully. The regulator also emphasizes that offshore operators may not offer the same consumer protections as licensed gaming services in Australia.
Regulatory Oversight and Compliance
Aside from blocking offshore online casinos, the ACMA also ensures compliance within Australia’s media industry. In February, the regulator identified Ten Network, an Australian television network, for violating gambling advertising regulations during the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix broadcast in March 2024.
Ten Network had aired gambling advertisements during the prohibited hours of 5:00 am to 8:30 pm, violating strict rules. The incident was attributed to human error, and Ten Network Holdings took corrective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
