The Former Mandalay Bay Security Chief Given Second Chance in Gaming Industry
Sandy Seda, the former security chief at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, has been granted a second opportunity in the gaming industry. The Nevada Gaming Commission made a surprising decision to overturn the previous suspension of his gaming registration.
Narrow 3-2 Vote for Seda’s Comeback
In a tight 3-2 vote, the Commission reversed the suspension, allowing Seda to reapply for work in the sector. The initial suspension of Seda’s registration by the Nevada Gaming Control Board was based on allegations of spousal abuse, which Seda strongly denied.
During a 35-minute hearing before the Commission, Seda contested the accusations. Although he later pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in November, the conviction did not fall under felony, gross misdemeanor, or crime of moral turpitude.
Losing his gaming registration had forced Seda out of the industry. However, the recent ruling has opened a pathway for his return.
The Suspension Stemmed from Allegations
Seda, a former Marine who served in Iraq and a former police chief at UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada, received support from his criminal defense attorney, Michael Becker.
Becker emphasized that Seda’s suspension was based on allegations rather than a final legal decision. This approach differs from how other licensed professionals, such as doctors or lawyers, are typically treated.
“This was certainly the low point for Mr. Seda,” Becker stated. “His marriage fell apart, and he was in a toxic relationship that resulted in charges being filed and later dismissed. The only thing on his record is disturbing the peace.”
Seda: “I’m a Good Man and a Good Father”
Despite the emotional nature of the case, the Commission’s three-member majority, represented by Rosa Solis-Rainey, Brian Krolicki, and George Markantonis, found the evidence inconclusive and voted to overturn the suspension.
Seda maintained his innocence, stating, “I’ve never touched her. I know better than that. I’m a good man and a good father.”
Solis-Rainey acknowledged the seriousness of domestic violence but highlighted the challenge of overcoming unproven accusations. Krolicki noted Seda’s long service history and described the incident as an isolated occurrence in an otherwise exemplary career.
On the other hand, retired judges Jennifer Togliatti and Abbi Silver dissented, arguing that the allegations should not be dismissed.
Togliatti emphasized the complexity of domestic violence and the importance of considering all details, including physical evidence like bruises on Seda’s ex-wife.
At the end of January, the Nevada Gaming Commission rejected a settlement with Nicole Bowyer, a former Resorts World Las Vegas agent involved in illegal gambling operations and money laundering.
