Gambling Self-Exclusion Scheme Sees Surge in Young Adults Seeking Help
GAMSTOP, the UK’s national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling, has recently released a report showcasing a significant increase in young adults signing up for its services in the second half of 2024.

Throughout the entire year of 2024, GAMSTOP experienced a record-breaking number of registrations, partly due to major sporting events like the UEFA European Football Championship and the Olympics.
In the second half of 2024, there was a 14% increase in new registrants compared to the previous year, deviating from the usual trend of higher registrations in the first half of the year.
Notably, there was a staggering 31% year-on-year increase in the number of under-25s creating GAMSTOP accounts, making up almost a quarter (24%) of all new registrants.
Since its launch in April 2018, a total of 532,484 individuals have signed up for GAMSTOP services, equivalent to over 1% of the entire adult UK population.
Preference for Longer Self-Exclusion Periods
Almost half of the new registrants (48%) opted for the maximum self-exclusion period of five years, indicating a strong demand for longer-term solutions. GAMSTOP responded to this by introducing an auto-renewal option for those who selected the 5-year period.
Registrants can enable the auto-renewal feature, which extends their self-exclusion period automatically. However, they also have the flexibility to opt-out if they choose to do so.
Furthermore, GAMSTOP will send reminder emails to players every 15 months to keep them informed about their exclusion status and upcoming renewal dates.
Call for Targeted Education and Support
While the increase in registrations reflects a higher visibility of GAMSTOP services, it also highlights a growing number of players facing gambling-related issues. CEO Fiona Palmer emphasized the need for targeted education and support, particularly for younger gamblers.
Palmer stated that GAMSTOP is committed to collaborating with charities like Ygam and Gamcare to reach out to younger players and ensure they are aware of the available safer gambling tools.
“GAMSTOP allows vulnerable consumers to take a break from gambling and we want to raise awareness of the service amongst those who need it most,” said Palmer.
She also pointed out that certain regions have a higher concentration of individuals seeking GAMSTOP’s services, hoping that this data will assist governments and safer gambling organizations in providing appropriate support to those in need.
Overall, GAMSTOP’s efforts to support at-risk gamblers and promote responsible gambling practices remain crucial in addressing the growing challenges within the industry.
